April 3, 1946 (Windsor, Ontario) - April 11, 2021 (Calgary, Alberta)
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of Roy James Carey of Calgary, AB – husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. With family by his side, Roy passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021 – one week after his 75th birthday. Love, laughter and many stories filled the weekend of his birthday (Easter weekend). His family is so thankful to have those last memories to cherish.
Born in Windsor, ON, Roy was raised in Vancouver and graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor of Economics. During his time at university, Roy played for the UBC Thunderbirds football team, cruised around Richmond, BC in his Triumph TR3 and most importantly, met his future wife Joyce (nee Hodgkins). His career took him to Penticton, BC, Ottawa, ON and finally to Calgary, AB where he settled with his family while working for NOVA Corporation and TransCanada Pipelines.
Roy loved to tell and listen to stories – he was energized by storytelling. When he wasn't sharing his many tales and adventures, you could find Roy planting flowers in his yard in Lake Bonavista and most recently on his patio overlooking south Calgary.
Roy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-nine years, Joyce; his four children James (Alisha), Elizabeth (Sean), Thomas (Krista) and Stephen (Carolyn); and by his eleven grandchildren Alyssa, Madison, Ethan, Lorelai, Emma, Asher, Cooper, Caitlyn, Colten, Sawyer and Spencer. He is also survived by his two brothers, Neil (Joy) and John (Delaine), and his sister Mary (Malcolm).
